What is KAZENOKO? 

KAZENOKO in Japanese is “Kids of wind” if you make a literal translation. There is a proverb “Kodomo wa Kazenoko” meaning that “Kids are happy to play outside in all weather”. Yes indeed, they are somehow strong enough to be outside even if it is freezing or snowing or extremely hot. KAZENOKO was named in the hope that babies newly born to this world would grow into such active kids.

The Maker

Hello, I’m Chihiro, a mom of 2 kids, based in Amsterdam. I am originally from Kyoto, Japan and have lived in the Netherlands since 2015.

In 2017, a couple of months later I gave birth to my daughter, I felt that I was left behind from the society as I had been a housewife since I moved to the country. I was eager to feel more independent.

One day, I found that most of the clothes sold in the tallest country in the world was bigger for my family. I started to think about having a sewing machine at home to alter clothes. Then suddenly an idea came out. “Making baby clothes” as my work. I originally like hand working and I thought this could be a new and fun challenge for me and something nice to my baby as well.

However, I have never taken any course related to fashion. I bought a sewing machine and that was the first moment after a long time (since when I was a schoolgirl) to touch the machine. I also bought an overlock machine which I had no experience. Since then I have taught myself how to use them and make baby clothes. Actually, it’s tough but at the same time a great experience for me!

CONCEPT

Organic

Unlike conventional cotton, organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides and herbicides. This means that both plants and lands are not contaminated by those artificial things. Therefore, you can have a low-impact on cultivated lands by purchasing clothes made of organic cotton. Also, those clothes are of course kind to the skin.

Minimal

Minimal style is sustainable. When it comes to baby clothes, basic outfits are always welcomed and often kept for future use as hand-me-downs which is a super great idea for both parents and our planet.

Handmade

All the products are carefully made by handwork. The fabrics used are of course chosen with cares as well. It is always nice to wear something different from what others are wearing, isn’t it?
